In their Concluding Observations on the Rights of the Child in Scotland (2023) the UNCRC Committee drew attention to work which still needs attention in Scotland. Under the general principles: The right not to be treated unfairly (Article 2) and Adults should always do what’s best for children (Article 3) Gypsy/Traveller children were named specifically as those who frequently suffered from bullying and discrimination. The report also recommended that ALL children should have the same opportunities to learn and thrive safely in schools. The government now has a responsibility to tackle these issues before the return visit of the UNCRC.
In this workshop, we hear experiences of education and discrimination from the voices of young people in the community, share how we are implementing rights-based teaching and learning and propose how this work should be taken forward for Gypsy/Traveller children
