In September STEP hosted a virtual audience with author and playwright Richard O’Neill. Brought up in the nomadic storytelling tradition, Richard has written many books drawing on his culture and traditions. Twenty-four pupils from the Gypsy/Traveller community from three primary schools in Aberdeenshire joined the virtual creative writing event. Richard shared stories and experiences from his nomadic background and community and pupils gained new knowledge and skills to become more confident and able writers. They also had opportunities to ask questions and share their own experiences. The range of topics included nomadic culture and identity, how to start a story, and the importance of reading, writing and oracy. Teachers gained strategies for implementing culturally sustaining pedagogies for literacy development and improved cultural knowledge and awareness. We plan to run similar sessions with Richard O’Neill again in 2025 so please get in touch if you are interested in joining in-person or virtual workshops.
