Policy and Guidance

Inclusive digital learning

STEP is a national knowledge exchange centre supporting equitable access to education for nomadic communities. We are funded by Scottish Government Equalities and Human Rights and Learning Directorates. We have three activity streams, each with the aim of improving outcomes for Gypsy/Traveller and Roma communities in education: Community intervention programmes, policy influence, and professional learning.

STEP coordinates TENET (the Traveller Education Network, Scotland), a professional learning community for educators working with  Through collaboration with communities and STEP, members produce research, training, and resources to facilitate vital information exchange and professional development.

STEP LEARNING APP

Personalised and easy to use, our Learning App offers an intuitive, two-way communication between learners and teachers. Use it to plan, share learning and reflect on progress together. The app is free and hosted on a secure server.

 STEP STARTER SACK PROGRAMME

Many Gypsy/Traveller and Roma families do not take up the offer of pre-school education and some do not go to school. STEP Starter Sacks are part of an early learning programme aiming to make connections between families and learning centres.

The Sacks are available to all Gypsy/Traveller and Roma families with young children in Scotland. They contain a range of materials and activities to encourage child-centred play at home and involve parents in their children’s learning.  To tackle family literacy barriers, the activity cards feature QR codes that link to videos on STEP website.  STEP provides the Sacks as well as support for local staff to increase knowledge of barriers to accessing education for Gypsy/Traveller and Roma families. Please contact STEP to book CPD or online training and visit the programme webpages for more information.
