education and nomadic communities

Richard O’Neill MBE shares reflections on education and nomadic cultures

Author, playwright and storyteller Richard O’Neill (MBE) shares insights into the value of education. Richard comes from a traditionally nomadic background travelling across the North of England and Scotland.  Richard’s perspective provides us with new ways of thinking about education and its relevance to traditionally nomadic communities. His insights can also help you reflect on your existing practice, processes and resources and think about how you could provide more culturally sustaining approaches. Teachers and practitioners should use these videos as a rich addition to culturally awareness raising training with staff teams.

What are the positive aspects of nomadic culture that need to be celebrated and shared in schools?

What changes have you observed in schools over the last 5-10 years that have benefited GRT children?

What changes are needed to enable children from nomadic communities to access and receive an education that’s right for them and their community?

Do you have any advice for teachers when they feel that the education system is not supporting them to meet the needs of the GRT children they work with?

Who or what was the biggest influence on your education and career?

What advice would you give young people from travelling communities about going to school?
